Dorothy B. Nelsen, age 91, of Newell, Iowa, died Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the Newell Good Samaritan Home in Newell.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Newell, with Pastor Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 5, 2005 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Dorothy Bernice Boyce was born in Newell, Iowa on February 17, 1914 to George W. and Anna (Jensen) Boyce. She lived with her family in the Newell area, attending and graduating from Newell High School in 1931. Dorothy furthered her education by attending Buena Vista College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught country school north of Newell for 3 years.

She was a member of the Newell First Congregational Church where she had been baptized and confirmed.

On June 8, 1935, Dorothy was united in marriage to Edward P. Nelsen at the Newell First Congregational Church. Their union was blessed with three children: Daryl Glenn, Judith Ann and Alice Jean.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother who delighted in keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. Her love of family was evident, especially with the great affection and interest she had for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy loved spending her winters in Texas. In her earlier years, Dorothy delighted in singing and playing piano and violin. Spending time with friends and family always made her happy.

Dorothy was an active member of the Newell community. She was a member of the Newell Federated Club, Buena Vista County Republican Women and the SWN Club. In addition to those, Dorothy was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and assisted with activities surrounding the Allee Historical Mason.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Daryl Nelsen and his wife Mary Beth of Adel, Iowa; her daughters: Judith Giddings and her husband V. Gerry of Georgetown, Texas and Alice Nielsen of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren: Chetney Nelsen and his wife Teri, J. Matthew Nelsen and his wife Lori, Thomas Giddings and his wife Rachel, Krista Giddings and her husband Michael Ehrhardt, and Kara Giddings; great grandchildren: Christian, Jakob, Emily and Zachery Nelsen, Fenton, Jacy and Jeb Nelsen, Peter and Andrew Giddings, and Emma and Evan Ehrhardt; niece, Virginia Saylor; life-long best friend, Zora Baughman; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward P. Nelsen, and one brother, Douglas D. Boyce.
