Frederick, 82, of Lansing was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend, and he peacefully went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, surrounded by the love of his family.

Fred lived a faith filled, Christian life. He was compassionate and kind to all that crossed his path. Fred lived his whole life in Lansing. While still attending Eastern High School Fred began working at the Lansing State Journal. He worked in various departments over his 42 years of employment; Fred retired from the Journal as a District Circulation Manager.

He was an active member of the First United Brethren Church, where he held positions as Treasurer, Usher and Board Member. Fred enjoyed the time with his church family of men spending spring breaks in Kentucky doing construction and repairs on churches needing their help. He was also active with the Gideons, providing Bibles to service personnel before they were deployed. Fred recently began attending the Eden United Brethren Church due to the closing of his previous church.

Fred was predeceased by his first wife, Doris (Karkau); his father, Fred Sharp Sr.; his mother, Gladys Smith; his stepmother, Ginger Sharp; and his sister, Ruth Lewis.

Fred is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children, Linda (Ed) Ziegenhagen of Holt, Mary (Douglas) Hamilton of Mecosta, William Sharp of Lansing, Barbara (Paul) Fancher of Lansing and Donald Sharp of Lansing; his stepchildren, Cindy (John) Mahoney, Dawn (Frank) Hernandez, and Ron Gilbert all of Florida; Angie (Mike) McKone of DeWitt, Lisa (John) Asher of California and Randy (Jennifer) Gilbert of Grand Ledge; 34 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Sharp; sister, Joyce Ferris; brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Fred greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also embraced traveling, having visited all but a few states; went to Australia; experienced chartered bus trips with church friends to places like New York, Branson, MO, and a few adventurous "mystery" trips with the destination unknown until arrival.

The past eight years Fred had been wintering in Crystal River, FL, enjoying the warmth and working on puzzle books. He had a passion for aviation (having taken flying lessons earlier in his life). Fred attended air shows and museums, taking grandchildren with him to share in the fun. He was fortunate to feel the thrill of a "soaring plane" ride for his 75th birthday.

Fred had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed joking with family, friends and even strangers. The family would like to thank Hospice of Ingham Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave Fred during his last days with us.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 1, 2011 at Eden United Brethren Church, Mason, with Pastor Scott Hergert and Pastor Theron Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Gideons Memorial Bibles, Lansing, MI. or McLaren Visiting Nurse and Hospice, Lansing, MI. in memory of Fred Sharp.
