U.S. Air Force, COL WWII

Obituary
Frederick News-Post - May 13, 2005

Mr. Charles W. Johnson, Colonel USAF (retired) of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Camp Springs, Md., passed away on May 9, 2005, after suffering a stroke on April 18, 2005 while at home.

He was the husband of Mary Ann Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was born on May 29, 1923 on a farm near Judson, Minn. He left home at the age of 17 to enlist in the Army Air Corps and to serve his country in WWII.

Chuck, as he was known best, would become a career Air Force officer. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1944 and served as a pilot in Europe in the later stages of WWII. He would ultimately spend the bulk of his career as a B-52 bomber pilot and in various command positions in the Strategic Air Command prior to his retirement in 1972. He worked for several years in the life insurance industry after that, having settled in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. near Andrews AFB. He was, however, a military man through and through. He truly cherished his years in the Air Force along with many lifelong friends that he and his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann, made along the way. Chuck and Mary Ann moved to Melbourne, Fla. in April 2002, and had three wonderful years together in the Indian River Colony Club community.

Surviving besides his wife are his sons, Dr. Lynn Johnson of Greenville, N.C., Dr. Eric Johnson of Oakland, Calif., Dr. Tom Johnson of Johnson City, Tenn.; daughter-in-laws, Darilyn, Rebecca, Venetia; 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles W. Johnson IV in 1977 and his sister, Betty Kliev in 1985.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 16 at the Hilton Funeral Home (hiltonfh.com), 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville, Md. Inurnment will follow with military honors at the Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chuck's name to the Monocacy Cemetery, P.O. Box 81, Beallsville, MD 20839.
