Wife of Martin Perry Burdge. Matilda married Martin in Sullivan county Indiana on 12 Aug. 1869. They then moved with her mother Elizabeth Oaks to Filmore county Nebraska by the 1870 census.

FAG member M. Jensen Seggerman (47078678) graciously contributed the following obituary from "The Nebraska Signal" Oct. 2, 1924 pg. 1. Their contribution is truly appreciated.

Matilda J. Oaks was born in 1851 in Sullivan County, Indiana, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lillian Thompson, in Omaha, Neb., Tuesday, September 23, 1924, aged 73 years, 6 months and 22 days. She was married to Martin P. Burdge August 12, 1869, and in the following year they came out west to take a homestead in Fillmore county, south of Exeter. They remained on their farm until 1890, when they moved to Geneva where they lived until the death of Mr. Burdge in 1912.

The union was blessed with nine children, three of whom died in early life. One son, Charles C. died six years ago in Los Angeles. Those still living are Mrs. Zetta Sauer of Benkleman, Neb., Mrs. Alice Puckett of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Bessie Vodra of Strasburg, Colo., Mrs. Lillian Thompson of Omaha, Neb., E.M. Burdge of Omaha, Neb.; all of whom with the exception of Mrs. Puckett were present at the funeral. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J.W. Williams of Geneva, and 16 grandchildren.

Since shortly after the death of her husband in 1912, Mrs. Burdge has made her home with her children. For the last three years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lillian Thompson, in Omaha.

She was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was a member of the W.C.T.U. She devoted her life to her home and children. Her labors and devotion were eminently blessed and her children grew up to call her blessed.

She became sick last spring. Her strength gradually waned, and like a tired child falling to sleep, she sank into her last rest, having attained the allotted span of life.

The body arrived in Geneva last Thursday afternoon. The funeral took place from the Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Friday and was conducted by Rev. David Tudor of the Congregational church. Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery.
Among those coming here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Thompson and E.M. Burdge and daughter, Doris of Omaha; Mrs. Bessie Vodra of Strasburg, Yolo., Mr. and Mrs. John Sauer of Benkelman and Mrs. Myrtle King of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mrs. King is a daughter of Mrs. J.W. Williams of Geneva.
