DOC GILLIATT MURDERED

C. L. "Doc" Gilliaatt, Nucla garage operator, was bludgeoned to death near Vancorum Wednesday morning. He was found about 1 mile south of the junction of Highway 141 and old Highway 90.
Gilliatt was evidently struck a terrific blow, fell off the road, then was dragged along the road into the ditch and into the bushes off the shoulder. He was killed by several blows to the head with a pick-like weapon.
The mystery was complicated by the finding of Gilliatt's car demolished by fire on Atkinson Mesa about 20 miles from the scene of the murder. The fire apparently started inside the car; the motor did not show much damage.

SAN MIGUEL FORUM 23 DEC 1955

Pallbearers were Adam Hook, Montrose, Walter Rooney, Norwood, Tom Kelly, Frank Sell, W.A. Scott and Robert Ebbs, all of Nucla. Interment in Nucla cemetery was directed by Ormsbee Mortuary.
Born Nov 26, 1909 at Somerville, Mass. Chester L Gilliatt was the son of Charles Lester and Maude (Bezanson) Gilliatt. His early years were spent in the vicinity of his birthplace, where he attended school. Following graduation from high school at Somerville, he attended Aurora College at Aurora, Ill., completing a four-year course with a bachelor of science degree.
A resident of Colorado for the past 15 years, he had spent the past 13 years at Nucla, where he was employed as a mechanic and garage operator.
He was a member and deacon of the Nucla Congregational Church, treasurer of the Moose Lodge and a former member of the Nucla Fire Department.
