Major is given name and not a military rank. Major C. Wheelock was a cabinet maker, the first of his line to depart from farming. Major and his wife Mary moved to Lawrence, MA, between 1865 and 1869, where he gained employment in the cabinet making factories. At the time, the industrial revolution was booming in the United States, while the economy of Nova Scotia was depressed.

They had two other children not linked as of May 2020: Mildred Lois Lucas (Arthur) 1880-1958, who died in Maine, and Freeman Newcomb Wheelock (Martha Griffin) (1859-1944) who died in the Syracuse, New York, area.
