MRS. C. CARTWRIGHT, PIONEER RESIDENT OF OREGON PASSES AWAY
Well Known Former Portland W oman Dies at Gearhart-by-the-Sea.
News was received from Gearhart this morning announcing the sudden death of Mrs. Charlotte Terwilliger Moffett Cartwright, a well known pioneer resident of Portland since 1845. Mrs. Cartwright was born inHancock county, Illinois, December 21, 1842. She crossed the plains with her parents, James and Mrs. Terwilliger in 1845. Her mother died on the north side of the Columbia River in December, 1845, while the family was making the portage around the Cascades. Mrs. Cartwright's first marriage was to Walter Moffett on April 12, 1860. He died on May 20, 1878. She was married the second time to Charles M. Cartwright of this city on March 8, 1887. Since her first marriage her home has been at the corner of Broadway and Madison streets until the last two years, during which time she has lived in her cottage at Gearhart. Mrs. Cartwright was chairman of the Woman's auxiliary of the Oregon Pioneer association for 15 years and rendered effective service. Three years ago she was made honorary president. Mrs. Cartwright was the mother of six children, but only two survive their mother, James P. and William H. Moffett."

Another Notice of Death published in the Oregon Journal, Portland, Oregon, on Sa. July 24, 1915, on page 8:
"Woman Was True Friend to Needy
Mrs. C. Cartwright's Funeral Attended by Former Sailor, Who Recalls Many Noble Deeds of the Departed.
In attendanc at the funeral of the late Mrs. Charlotte Carwright, held yesterday, was a man who had met her over 40 years ago, when he was a strange sailor boy just from his ship. She spoke kindly to the lad; helped him get a position; helped him with a kindly smile and a little interest in his welfare, just as she did many others. Charles R. Price, one of the officers of the Loyal Order of the Moose in this city, was the lad. "Mrs. Cartwright was the friend of the sailors in those days. Her husband owned the Occidental hotel and the bark Edward James," he said. "Many a sailor boy got a helping hand because of Mrs. Cartwright. She was the first woman who spoke to me in Oregon. She was a Godsend to many a wandering boy, I tell you. I well remember, in July, 1876, when the second mate of the British ship Griesdale was drowned while in swimming near the old Pacific dock, at the foot of Madison streets. Mrs. Cartwright wrote to his folks in England, sent them his little keepsakes, looked after the funeral and saw that his grave was marked. There are mighty fee women like Mrs. Cartwright was--mighty few. I went to her funeral out of respect to her for all the many things she did for sailors."
the funeral services were held at the Holman parlors. Dean Ramsey of the Episcopal church officiated. Interment was in Lone Fir cemetery. A large number of friends attended, and the floral tributes were many. Mrs. Cartwright is survived by her two sons, James P. and William H. Moffett of Portland. She was 73 years of age, a native of Illinois, and came when a child to Oregon."

I have submitted these obituaries as they should be considered historical. She was an Oregon Pioneer, as well as her second husband, Charles Morrison Cartwright.
