Revolutionary War Veteran Peter Wilson, L.L.D., a native of Leith, Scotland, came to the American colonies as a 17-year-old in 1763, and eventually became well known as a professor of languages at Columbia College in Manhattan. He may have retained a trace of a burr in his speech, as his contemporaries readily identified him as a Scot. When he died at age 79, he was buried near the plot of Gen. Enoch Poor, an American hero of the Revolutionary War, and the shared grave of two toddlers who died in the 1770's, "Each Named Maria Wilson", who were probably his daughters.
