William Webber Doveton was one of eight children born to John and Mary (Worral) Doveton. The others were: Elizabeth Doveton, Eleanor Doveton (Bazett),Jonathan Doveton, Gabriel Doveton, Fanny Doveton, John Doveton,and Frederick Doveton.William lived his entire life on the island of St. Helena, his first trip away was when he was fifty-five, he travelled to England where he was knighted.It was the first time he or his family had seen snow or a large town.Descended from a 17th century settler family, he worked for the East India Co.for 48 yrs, starting as a writer and rose to President of the Council and Commandant during the Napoleaonic wars. During Napoleon's exile he visited Sir William at Mount Pleasant. He was remembered as a well mannered man with an excellent heart. Sir William was honored with a stamp in 2002.
