Actor. He is best remembered for his portrayal of the staunch Mr. Kirkland in "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" (1985). After serving in the United States Army during World War II, upon returning to civilian life following the end of the war, he settled in California and under the G.I. Bill, he attained his degree in theatrical arts from the Actors Lab and began his career as a leading man on the stage. Upon being discovered by actor Edward G. Robinson while attending a social function at the prestigious Ciro's nightclub, he was so impressed by his dark good looks, slim physique, and distinctive voice, that he took notice of his potential and arranged for him to begin a career in the film industry beginning with him appearing alongside himself in "Black Tuesday" (1954). From there, he would go on to flourish as a notable character actor appearing in over 150 features; often typecast as husbands, fathers, relatives, boyfriends, eccentrics, landlords, neighbors, curmudgeons, blue-collared guys, con-artists, soldiers, sailors, sergeants, lieutenants, policemen, detectives, reporters, city slickers, cowboys, sheriffs, deputies, bailiffs, foreigners, historical or literary figures, doctors, chauffeurs, retail clerks, managers, doormen, bellhops, bartenders, authority figures, and patriarchs. He appeared in such feature films as "The Ten Commandments" (1956), "Violent Road" (1958), "Cry Tough" (1959), "The Leech Woman" (1960), "Man-Trap" (1961), "The Maltese Bippy" (1969), "The Cat Ate the Parakeet" (1972), "Brannigan" (1972), "Police Academy 3: Back in Training" (1986), "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" (1987), and "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" (1989). On television, he appeared in numerous guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "The Twilight Zone," "I Spy," "Warner Brothers Presents," "Studio 57," "The Man Called X," "Tombstone Territory," "Navy Log," "Broken Arrow," "Men of Annapolis," "Decoy," "The Millionaire," "State Trooper," "Alcoa Theatre," "Peter Gunn," "Zorro," "The Third Man," "Yancy Derringer," "Colonel Humphrey Flack," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Playhouse 90," "One Step Beyond," "Mike Hammer," "21 Beacon Street," "Mr. Lucky," "Lawman," "Wanted: Dead or Alive," "Riverboat," "Johnny Midnight," "Route 66," "Stagecoach West," "The Brothers Brannigan," "Rawhide," "Adventures in Paradise," "Follow the Sun," "Perry Mason," "The Outer Limits," "Dr. Kildare," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gunsmoke," "Honey West," "Burke's Law," "Get Smart," "Jericho," "Insight," "Death Valley Days," "Star Trek," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," "The Name of the Game," "Hawaii Five-O," "Mannix," "The Streets of San Francisco," "The Odd Couple," "Police Story," "Wonder Woman," "Man from Atlantis," "Happy Days," "Lou Grant," and "Quincy, M.E." During his career, he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, had been a member of the Hollywood Democratic Committee, was a regular parishioner of the Greek Orthodox church, had been a commercial model for the Forbes Agency, was a theatrical instructor for the Pasadena Playhouse, presided on his local charters of the American Red Cross and the Boys & Girls Clubs, was the celebrity spokesman for Acme Markets, had his own nationwide one man show, was one of the many founding members of the Canyon Theatre Guild, and he was married to actress and model Midge Ware from 1954 to 1964 (their union ended in divorce and produced two children).
