Ferdinand M. Schneider, 79, former Town Meeme chairman and member of the Manitowoc county board for 31 years, passed away Wednesday at St. Nicholas hospital. He had been ill for the past three weeks.

Mr. Schneider, a public servant in the Meeme township for 45 years, was feted a year ago at a big public meeting at Kutylen's hall in Meeme, following his announcement that he was retiring from public office.

He was a native of the township, born there on Jan. 13, 1871. He was married to the former Emma Roethel, who also was a native of the town of Meeme, and the couple lived on a farm all their lives. They celebrated their golden anniversary on Nov. 15, 1946. He was a member of the Bethel Evangelical and Reformed church, and for many years was an elder and a church deacon. Among the many offices he held, during his long service to his township, were town chairman, district assessor, and town clerk.

While on the Manitowoc County board, he served as chairman of the board and chairman of the highway committee. He was prominent in advancing many projects in Manitowoc County, among them the sanitorium at Whitelaw. His advice was sought by many in public office, and his value to the people of the county was extolled many times by community leaders.

Survivors are his wife; six daughters, Mrs. Nick (Hilda) Jensen of Sheboygan, Mrs. Hugo (Ida) Vandoske of Town Mosel; Mrs. Ray (Ella) Horneck of Town Rhine, Mrs. Armin (Lydia) Kretsch of town Herman, Mrs. George (Erna) Van Driest of Cedar Grove, and Mrs. Norman (Elsa) Spindler of Town Meeme; two sons, Milton, at home, and Walter of Millersville; 31 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
