Kiel Area Farmer, 47, Killed By Falling Ice
KIEL-A 47-year-old rural Kiel farmer was killed Saturday afternoon when a large chunk of ice fell and crushed him in a silo.
He was Alfred Eckardt of 16210 county Trunk M.
Authorities said Eckardt left the main farm about 3 p.m. and went to a nearby second farm he owns to feed cattle.
Chief Manitowoc County deputy coroner Joseph Jajodinsky (sic) said he died almost instantly when a 400 to 500 pound piece of ice fell on him. Death was attributed to a crushed chest and asphyxiation.
Family members became concerned when he failed to return home for supper by 5:30 p.m. and his wife and son went looking for him. They found him in the silo at about 6 p.m.
A chainsaw had to be used to enlarge an opening in the silo so the body could be removed.
Mr. Eckardt was born April 8, 1938, in the Town of Meeme, a son of Alfred and Annie Scheib Eckardt.
He graduated from Keil High Scool (sic) in the class of 1956.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Germany from 1956 to 1958.
His marriage to Carol Bahlow took place Oct. 21, 1961, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls. The couple farmed in the Town of Meeme following marriage.
For seven years he worked for the Kohler Co. and he also worked for the Clevelan (sic) Coop.
Mr. Eckardt was a member of Bethel UCC in the Town of Herman and the church choir. He belonged to the Plymouth Barbershoppers and was a member of the Manitowoc County Farm Bureau.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Karen, and a son, Robert, both at home.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Bethel UCC in the town of Herman. The Rev. James Sizelove, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel after 4 p.m. Tuesday and, on Wednesday, from 9 to 11 a.m. visitation will continue at the church from noon until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Eckardt's name.
