George R. Williams, 80, of 2528 Glenwood Ave., former restaurant operator, concessionaire, amusement park operator and home builder, died yesterday in St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.

Until he retired in 1951, Mr. Williams, with two sons, operated Williams Grill, 335 St. Clair St., for 17 years.

Born in February 12, 1874 Blissfield, Mich., a son of the late Simeon J. and Sarah Cantrick Williams, Mr. Williams lived in the Toledo area most of his life. In 1900, he operated a restaurant at the old Casino amusement center in Bay View Park. During the summers until 1918, Mr. Williams operated amusement parks in various parts of the country, including the Olentangy Park in Columbus.

During the winters, Mr. Williams was engaged in home building and constructed about 100 residences in Toledo.

In 1918, Mr. Williams took over a food and confections concession at Tiedke's. With his sons, Russell H. and the late Herbert C., Mr. Williams ran the soda fountain, lunch counter, and candy, popcorn, peanuts, soft drink and similar stands which lined the entrance arcade to the department store. He operated them until he opened the Williams Grill in 1934.

Mr. Williams also invested in downtown real estate and owned several pieces of business property including the building in which the grill is located and a portion of the Lion Store property. Mr. Williams retired when Williams Grill was sold to Kresge in January, 1951.

Mr. Willliams was a brother of the late Harold E. Williams, former principal of both Libbey and Woodward High Schools. His son, Herbert, died in 1950 and his wife, Adelaide, died last November.

He was an active member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church and Rubicon Lodge, F&AM.

Surviving besides the son, Russell H., are a sister, Mrs. George Paine, Toledo; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
