NOTE: The birth-date on his Death Certificate Photocopy is June 16, 1828. I used the date given in his autobiography, "Four Years on Wheels" - c 1880 - Page 1, Chapter I.

He died at 506 - 4th Street. (Death Certificate Photocopy))


Famous Inventor. He was one of the earliest steam-powered automobile builders in America. In Wisconsin, in the early 1870s, he built "The Spark", which went 5 mph. In July, 1878 "The Oshkosh", built on his design, was ruled the winner in a road-race in Wisconsin.

- U.S. Patent 959,457 on May 31, 1910 for a "Vehicle-Tire"

Article on his death: "The Day Book" newspaper - Chicago, Illinois - December 22, 1914 - Volume 4, Number 73 - Last Edition - Page 31, "TELEGRAPH BRIEFS" - "Dr. J.W. Carhart, 82, known as "father of the automobile," having invented first machine of that kind, died at San Antonio, Tex."
