Thomas Clifford(Squire)Newton,77,one of Shelby county's widely known residents and Addison township jutice of peace for 30 years, died at 7:00 o'clock this morning at his home, 1107 Elm St. He had been in failing health for seven years and death was attributed to a complication of diseases. Mr. Newton,active in local Democrat politics for a number of years, had served as an Addison jutice of peace since June 27, 1926. He had maintained an office in the county courthouse since its construction in the 1930's. He was born in Switzerland county January 17, 1879, the son of Thomas and Tilly Newton. In 1908 he was married to Ora May Phillips who survives with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Newton was a member of the First Baptist Church and Rev. Melvin R. Phillips, pastor of the church, will officiate at the funeral rites at 2:00 p.m. Thursday. The services will be held at the Murphy Mortuary and interment will be at Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon Wednesday.
