John Smith "Mike'"Nettles Jr. was the fifth child born to John Smith Nettles Sr. and Missouri Elizabeth Parker he was born Mar 08, 1878 in Elizabeth City County. John married Eva Hunter Wood, daughter of William Edward Wood and Columbia Virginia McIntosh, May 1, 1912 in Big Bethel Baptist Church in York County, Virginia. They had eight children Rosa Lee, Lillian Elizabeth, John Henry, William Edward, Ruth Ann, Virginia Lee, Mildred Mae and Roland Merlstine Nettles. On their marriage record John's occupation was listed as "sawyer in mill" that job was more than likely how he lost one of his fingers. Census records show that John worked as a farmer most of his life. John died on Mar 27, 1932 at his home on Sawyer Swamp Road in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He is buried in a unmarked grave in the West Cemetery in Hampton Virginia. Eva "Hunter" Wood Nettles Garrett died Jan 20, 1972 in Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Virginia she is buried in Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton Virginia.
