He was born June 14, 1923 in Forrest Township, Livingston County to Dietrich John and Cornelia K. Simpsen Winterland. He married Esther H. Warsaw Donaldson on June 14, 1970 in Bloomington. She preceded him in death on Dec. 30, 2010. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ray and one sister, Anna Mae Wieting.
Surviving are one sister, Iva Rose (Marvin) Willke, Anchor; one stepson, David (Eileen) Donaldson, Hanover Park; two step-granddaughters and five nieces and nephews, Marlene (Robert) Dewey, Gary (Pamela) Willke, Brenda (Randy) Tomic, Mike (Molly) Wieting and Rita Meredith.
He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He was a recipient of two Battle Stars, Good Conduct medal, Victory medal, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster and the Purple Heart.
