Powhatan James was born December 29, 1880, in Virginia. His parents were Fleet H. and Harriet Elizabeth Kelly James.
He married Jessie Jenkins Truett (daughter of prominent Baptist minister George W. Truett).
He had 3 children.
He practiced law in Virginia before entering the clergy.
He attended the Seminary in Alabama, graduated 1913. He was the Pastor of churches in Selma; Dallas, Tex.; Nashville, Tenn.; Lynchburg, Va.; and First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, Ala. (1933-44);
He taught English Bible, University of Alabama; He served as president, Bethel College, Hendersonville, Ky., 1944. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Baptist Bible Institute, New Orleans, La.
He died December 10, 1956.
