Marjorie Elaine McNamara, age 84 of Goodhue, died peacefully on Friday evening with family at her bedside on March 25, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Marjorie was born on September 23, 1926 in Vasa Township, the daughter of Nels and Hilda (Ingeman) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at Vasa Lutheran Church. She attended country school in Vasa. She graduated from Red Wing High School in 1944, and went on to attend teacher's training for one year in Red Wing. She taught country school for five years near Vasa and Belle Creek Township. She married Francis McNamara on June 17, 1950 at St. Columbkill Catholic Church in Belle Creek. They lived in Belle Creek Township where they farmed for many years. Marjorie was a longtime member of St. Columbkill Catholic Church. She was also a member of Belle Creek Country Belles Extension home study group.
Marjorie enjoyed gardening; she had a "green-thumb" and loved landscaping and planting flower beds around her home. She was talented at many forms of needlework and enjoyed sewing. Marjorie hardly ever missed a day of cross-country skiing or walking. She and Francis traveled extensively; including trips to China, Sweden, Ireland and other parts of Europe. They also went on many dairy farm tours across the United States. Marjorie enjoyed cooking and baking. She also had a keen eye for home decorating. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, LeRoy and Virgil Nelson; and sister, Lucile Nelson.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years Francis; children, Steve (Helen) McNamara of Goodhue, Cindy (Bob) Eppen of Goodhue, Bruce (Marie) McNamara of Goodhue and Deb (Jim) Stanton of Rochester; 13 grandchildren, Matt (Anita) McNamara, Sara McNamara, Elizabeth (Josh) Teske, and Emily, Catherine and Anthony McNamara, Jeff (Amy) Eppen, Amy (John) Feely, Amanda (Derrick) Sommers, Blair and Kate McNamara, and Brian and Kelly Stanton; 6 great-grandchildren, Maria and Francis McNamara, Celine and Joseph Teske and Courtney and Caleb Eppen; sisters, Jeanette Larson and Ferne (Bill) Evans; brother-in-law, Earl Nelson; sister-in-law, Oretta Nelson and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Columbkill Catholic Church in Belle Creek Township, with Father Bruce Peterson officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday, March 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Columbkill Catholic Church and one hour prior to service on Tuesday. Active pallbearers will be Matt, Anthony and Blair McNamara, Josh Teske, Jeff Eppen, John Feely, Derrick Sommers and Brian Stanton. Interment will be held immediately following the service at St. Columbkill Catholic Cemetery.
