John Richard Skinner was the son of John Skinner and Huldah Treadwell Skinner of Bakersfield, VT. John Richard studied the law and became an attorney practicing in Fairfield and Hardwick Vermont. His wife was Emily Ward (Reid) Skinner.

The couple moved to Valparaiso, Indiana, in 1846, where John continued practicing law. He died only a few years after settling in Valparaiso. His was one of many lives during that time that was cut too short.
