Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland, at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps at New York City and served as a crew Sergeant on the gun ship USS Brooklyn. On August 5, 1864, he and his ship were in action against rebel forts and gunboats at Mobile Bay, Alabama. Despite severe damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board, Sgt. Hudson fought his gun with skill and courage throughout the 2-hour battle, that resulted in the surrender of the Confederate Ram Tennessee. His Medal was awarded on December 31, 1864 and accredited to the State of New York.
