"OBITUARY - [Communication] - Effie Bell Shepherd, daughter of Sheldon and Elizabeth Shepherd, was born in Kansas, January 3, 1872. In her late teens she, with her parents, moved to Oklahoma, where later she met William Walford and in 1898 they were united in holy wedlock. To the union were given seven children, four girls and three boys. Two of the girls and one boy died in infancy. About 21 years ago Mr Walford and family came to Spartansburg and purchased the farm that has since been their home. Very quickly they fitted into the social and religious life of the community and gathered around them a host of friends, taking an active part in the Enterprise Sunday school and church services as well as that in Spartansburg, and was also an active worker in the Grange. Six years ago the husband and father was laid to rest but the wife and four children picked up the broken threads of life and nobly continued in a most commendable way. For a short time of late Mrs Walford's health has not been the best, but her death came as a shock to the entire community as well as to her family. She was resting and visiting in the home of her daughter, Letha, where medical skill and loving care was given her but the Blessed Lord had other plans for our sister beloved, and while she was peacefully sleeping, He called 'come home,' and without a struggle she slipped through the beautiful gates to take up her residence in that city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God. She leaves to mourn her departure two daughters, Mrs John Rose and Mrs Harold Rose of Union City, and two sons, George and William, at home, seven grandchildren, also five sisters and two brothers in the West besides a host of more distant relatives and friends. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon with Rev W H Garnett in charge and Rev Lloyd Chelton reading the scripture. There were many beautiful floral pieces bearing mute testimony of the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Rose Hill cemetery."
