Dr. Orrin J. Mizer, 89, of 1206 Searle Dr., Normal, Ill., died July 5, 2006, at 6:15 a.m. in Manor Care Health Services at Normal.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006, in Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home at Bloomington, Ill., with Rev. David Dees officiating. Visitation will be Friday, July 7, 2006, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 8, 2006, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded.

Memorials may be made to the ISU Foundation. Arrangements are being handled by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, 1115 E. Washington St., Bloomington, Ill.

Dr. Mizer was born Dec. 25, 1916, in New Philadelphia, O., a son of Jacob Mizer and Alice Schumacher. On June 16, 1945, at Rockford, Ill., he married Ruth Blomberg, who survives, of Normal, Ill. Also surviving are children, Linda (Jim) Farruggia of Schaumburg, Ill., David (Debra) Mizer of Normal, Ill., and Kathleen (Jeffrey) Nelson of Metamora, Ill.; four grandchildren, Christopher Fuller, Bryan Fuller, Erin Mizer and Molly Mizer; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Fuller and Kaedon Mizer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church at Bloomington, Ill.

Dr. Mizer was an Associate Professor of Biology for 30 years at Illinois State University with most of the teaching in lab schools. He attended Kent State University, majoring in Biology. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in Biology and Minor in Education from Bowling Green State University. He then earned his Ph.D. in Science Education from the State University of Iowa. He served two years during World War II in the U.S. Army. His teaching included five years as an Elementary and Secondary Teacher in Tuscarawas County, O., and Elementary Teacher at Rockford, Ill., for one year. He was assistant principal for 10 years at ISSCS in Normal, Ill.; Supervisor of Student Teachers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for one year. He was a science teacher and consultant at Metcalf School for 16 years and Biology Teacher for five years at University High School in Normal. He also taught Teaching Biology 303, Natural Science for Elementary Teachers for 18 years and Teaching Biology 307, Methods in the Teaching of Biology for two semesters.

Dr. Mizer was a member of American Assn. for Advancement of Science; Mid-West Assn. of College Biology Teachers, Illinois Science Teachers Assn.; IEA; NEA; and Phi Delta Kappa.

After his retirement in 1982, Dr. Mizer continued to teach Science Seminar at University High School and Biology 307 in the Biology Department at ISU. He also scheduled group observations and Clinical Experiences at Metcalf School. He was a substitute teacher at University High. Dr. Mizer also taught Teaching Core III, Science Methods and Supervising of Biology Student Teachers at ISU
