She was born in Manti, Utah on September 21, 1917, the second of nine children born to Leland H. and Myrtle Tuttle Stevens. She spent her early years in the small town of Oakley, Utah, which was originally settled by her great-grandparents in 1868. Her family moved to Evanston, Wyoming when she was entering 5th grade and graduated from Evanston High School in 1935. She attended Utah State University and the University of Utah obtaining a teaching certificate and then teaching for one year in Centerfield, Utah.

Esther married her high school sweetheart, James C. McGarry, in Evanston, Wyoming on September 17, 1939. They moved to Ogden, Utah where Jim was a conductor on the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement. They had three children, Kaye McGarry Campbell; J. Steven (Judy), Kaysville; and E. Kelly (Nadine), South Ogden. Jim and Es were sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple on September 3, 2004 shortly after Jim was baptized into the LDS Church.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in the Highland Ward Relief Society and Primary.

Esther enjoyed her friendships and memberships in the Child Culture Club, DUP, and the UP Railroaders Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Pine Mountains, traveling, and attending athletic events of her six brothers, two sons and 11 grandsons.

Surviving are her two sons, 12 grandchildren, Stewart, Tyler, Matt, Jeff, Ryan, Chris, Kara, Brady, Patrick, Cody, Shane and Neal; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
