Historian. He taught history at Columbia University in New York City, New York from 1928 to 1958. His biographies of 22nd and 24th United States President Grover Cleveland (1932) and American statesman Hamilton Fish (1936) were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Among his other many books are the six-volume history of the Civil War era, "The Ordeal of the Union", and "The Gateway to History". He also established at Columbia the nation's first oral history program.
