Obituary- MONROE, LA

Robert Blouin Oliver died at home on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at the age of 90. He enjoyed a very active and happy life until a year ago when a bad back and other problems severely hampered his mobility. Bobby lived in Monroe his entire life except for four years in the service during World War II. He loved hunting, fishing, and playing golf and often said how fortunate we were to live in an area where we could enjoy so many lakes, rivers, and golf courses. He started playing golf at the Old Monroe Country Club across Phillips Bayou from his childhood home on Island Drive. It was on this course that he won the Monroe City Championship, adult division, at the age of 9. He was on the golf team at Neville High School, and in 1937, he won Neville's first ever state golf championship as a twosome with Ben Downing, Jr.

After graduating in 1937, he entered Tulane University on a golf scholarship. His lifelong love of golf continued with his membership at Bayou DeSiard Country Club where he served as President. At Tulane, he joined Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and enjoyed his years in New Orleans making many lifelong friends. With only one year remaining before graduating from law school, Bobby enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He received his first lieutenant rank in Australia and served on many different islands in the Pacific. He did not return to the states for four years and was one of the last servicemen to leave. In 1946 he returned to New Orleans and graduated from Tulane Law School in 1947. Bobby decided he did not want to practice law and instead joined Equitable Life Assurance Society as an agent. He remained at the Equitable for 62 years.

Bobby accumulated many achievements during that time, including 25 National Leaders Corps memberships and the Centurion Award. In 1980 he won the Superior Achievement Award, and in 1985 he received the Distinguished Service Award. In 1987, he was the Number Two Senior Sales Force Agent in the Nation. In 1975, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and in 1987 he entered the Order of Excalibur. In 1990, having attained 25 years at National Leader Corps level, he was awarded the Silver Medal of Honor. He was also a Summit Citation award winner in 1990 for career Production Credits. For many years, Bobby was awarded numerous trips to England and Switzerland and many other interesting destinations. During these yearly award trips, Bobby and Jane made many lasting friends. Bobby loved his business. It was a difficult decision to turn his clients over to other agents, but, because of his health, he knew they would be better served. Bobby never stopped giving attention to his clients needs, always reminding them if changes were needed or if a policy was available that would better fit their needs. His clients came first, and they felt a close friendship with Bobby and respected his advice. Although Bobby was physically limited over the past year, his mind remained as sound as ever. Although he had to give up his passion for golf years ago, he continued to enjoy hunting and fishing until recently. He would have loved to still be hunting, fishing or playing golf even at age 90.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Blanche Oliver, older brother Charles McVea Oliver and his best friends, Dickie, Eddie, and Corbin, who he missed so much. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 62 years, Jane Rhymes Oliver, three sons, six grandchildren and one great grandchild; his son Robert Jr., wife Karen and their daughters Alexis and Tara; his son Rhymes and his daughter Tracy, daughter and son-in-law Ashley and Jeff Wagner, and their son Nash; his son Mac and his sons McVea Jr. and Blake.

He appreciated close friendships with special sister-in-law Robertine Rhymes Cobb and her family and with Dr. Burchell Liles, who not only was Bobby's best friend and fishing buddy but who never tired of giving Bobby attention and encouragement. Bobby wanted to thank his wonderful nurse Denese Boyd with Prime Home Healthcare for her excellent and soothing care. Bobby would also like to thank his friends Thad Dilday, Jim Holmes, Mike Cook, Charles Venable, Nelson Abell, Dixon Abell, and especially Bob Lane, his friend and business associate. Thank you, Bob, for always showing so much love and respect for Mr. Bobby. Bobby also enjoyed the friendship, visits, and delicious food from Georgie Touchstone, June Holmes, Adele Ransom, Inez Haddad and many, many others.

Following a private family graveside service, a visitation will be held Wednesday at 12 pm in Kilbourne Hall at Grace Episcopal Church. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1 pm at Grace Church. Friends are welcome to visit the family at the Oliver's Point Drive home following the services. The family requests that memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
