Rena was born Rena Mae Bowers, daughter of Henry Loy Bowers and his wife Elizabeth Harvey. Rena lost her mother at an early age, afterwards her father gave Rena and her siblings to relatives to raise. Rena was taken in by her mothers sister. Elizabeth's sister had married into the Furley family. So Rena took on her aunt's married name and she became Rena Mae Bowers-Furley. Rena married Waite Garret Barbour and had two children: Mary Elizabeth and Henry Waite.
