Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the 17th Michigan Infantry and was appointed Captain, Company F. He was in actions at Antietam and Fredericksburg, in 1862, then went west with the IX Corps, seeing service at Vicksburg and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1863. On November 16, 1863, when his regiment was in imminent danger of capture at Lenoire Station, Tennessee, he seized the colors and rallied his men to victory after three color bearers had been shot. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in February, 1897. He was captured at the Battle of Spottsylvania, Virginia in May 1864, was prisoner exchanged in August 1864, from Charleston, South Carolina and promoted Colonel in December, 1864. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he returned to Detroit, Michigan and served as Postmaster, 1866 to 1874.
