Last person to be killed at the Berlin Wall through the use of weapons while trying to escape East Germany. He went to public school in East Berlin from 1975 to 1985, the next 2 years he was trained in restaurant services and became a waiter and bartender. Unsatisfied with the political situation in East Germany he had submitted several requests to be allowed to leave the country. He was scheduled to be drafted into mandatory military services in May of 1989. Mislead by a rumor that East German border patrols would no longer shot on people who were trying to escape East Germany, he and his friend Christian Gaudian attempted to cross the border 10 months before the fall of the Berlin Wall. During the night hours of the February 5th/6th, 1989 the two friends swam across the "Britzer Verbindungskanal", a waterway in Berlin which (in part) divided East from West. Border guards opened fire, killing Chris Gueffroy on the spot. The death of the 20-year-old Gueffroy leads to international protests against the "Schiessbefehl" and the Berlin Wall. The Western Allies protest, calling the shooting a "crime against humanity". The bullets fired at Chris Gueffroy and Christian Gaudian are the last fatal shots at the Berlin Wall.
