The Bannick Family considered themselves German. But, at the time Wilhelmine was born in the city of Rendsburg, it was located in the Duchy of Holstein, under the rule of the King of Denmark. When she and her mother came to America in 1880, Rendsburg was in Prussia. Today, it is located in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
