Juriaen was born in the Westphalia area of present Germany. He was living in Leiderdorp when he left the Netherlands on the ship DeHoutwyn on June 6, 1642 and was one of twenty-four passengers bought to America by Killian Van Rensselaer to work his lands at Fort Orange (Albany, New York). Juriaen worked one of the three farms Killiaen had on Papscanee Island in the Hudson River, a short distance south of Fort Orange. Juriaen wed Marretje Hansen at Fort Orange in 1653. In 1654, Juriaen and others moved to the Esopus Creek area to establish a settlement. This was chartered by the Dutch as the city of Wiltwick in 1661. There he and Marretje had six children:
1) Rymerick in 1654
2) Nicholas in 1657
3) Johannes in 1659
The Kingston Dutch Church was established in 1660 and Jurian's following children were christened there.
4) Abel, C: 25 Sep 1661. (Died 1689-96)
5) Symon (Simon), C: 30 Sep 1663
In 1664, Britain took over Dutch lands in America but the Dutch people could retain their land if they swore allegiance to Britain's king. The Dutch church was allowed to operate as Britain promoted the protestant faith as a force against the Catholic Church. Wiltwick was renamed Kingston by the British. Then was born:
6) Elsje (Elsie), C: 27 Jun 1666. (Died ~1687)
Jurian died in 1667 and left six children of ages one to thirteen. Marretje soon married Jacob Jansen and raised her children in Kingston.
There is no proof Juriaen is buried at the Kingston Dutch Church cemetery but his house was next to the church and the minister lived on the second floor of his house.
