Sherman's father, W.W. Carmichael died when he was two. His mother was Minnie Samsel Carmichael who died when he was in his teens. Minnie remarried to Grover T. Kirk when Sherman was three, and he had at least one half-brother. After Minnie died, Grover Kirk remarried Susie and Sherman had a Kirk half-brother. Sherman joined the US Marine Corps as a young man around the age of twenty-one. He had a successful military career as an exceptional pastry chef. He was a veteran and was given medals and commendations. He was a loving father of six children, all of whom are still living; however, since Sherman died while the children were very small, little is known of his family or step family. He was burried at Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA 92166 in Section U Site 36 in 1959.
