THOMAS FREEMAN PORTER Thomas Freeman Porter was born In Paradise, Nova Scotia, Oct. 30, 1847. When a boy, he moved first to Boston with his parents, then in 1861 to Swampscott, and later resided in Lynn. After working in the shoe industry for nearly ten years, he entered the grocery firm of Porter & Taylor, his brother Harding D. Porter being the senior member ; then he became a member of the firm of Porter, Hanson & Company. Since 1888 he had been engaged in the real estate and insurance business. Mr. Porter's public life included four terms in the Lynn Common Council, 1 885-1 888; the Board of Aldermen 1896 and 1897; representative, 12th Essex District, 1899 and 1900; senator, ist Essex District, 1902 and 1903; mayor of Lynn in 1908. He was past grand of Bay State Lodge, L O. O. F., past chief patriarch of Palestine Encampment, a member of Golden Fleece Lodge of Masons, Sagamore Tribe of Red Men, Knights of Pythias, Houghton Horticultural Society, Lynn Firemen's Relief Association, Board of Trade, Lynn and Essex County Republican Clubs, a director of the Bay State Fire In- surance Company, and joined the Lynn Historical Society, as a charter member (April 27, 1897). He married Miss Emma Elizabeth Norris of Lynn, on Sept. 14, 1876. She died Apr. 30, 1891, and Mr. Porter died at North Conway, N. H., on July 12, 1927, having been a resident of Lynn for more than sixty years. He is survived by his only son, Chester H. Porter of Lynn, who continues the business of his father.
