Services Thursday
KERRVILLE — Services for Mr. John F. Tom, 72, who died Monday at his home, will be held Thursday at 11:15 a.m. in the Kerrville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Tumlinson
and Rev. Gene Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Leakey Cemetery with the Leakey Masonic Lodge officiating.

Tom was born in Leakey on July 13,1919. He was the son of William Burgess Tom and Ola Cooper Tom. He was named for his grandfather, John Files Tom who was a hero in the Battle of San Jacinto. John Tom was an Air Force Veteran and a prisoner of war in North Africa for nine months during World War II.

He married Roma Jean Williams on May 8, 1945 in Ardmore, Okla. Tom was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #2801 in Kerrville and the Veterans of Foreign Wars group. Past worshipful master of Leakey Lodge No. 622 and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kerrville. He was responsible for organizing the Kerr County Ex-POWS chapter and was a member of the Real County range management. He served on the Nuecus Canyon School board for nine years and spearheaded the drive to form the G.I. School in Leakey. Tom also was responsible for bringing the American Legion organization to Leakey, of which he served as a commander for several years. Tom was a rancher and a real estate dealer who had worked and lived in the Hill Country his entire life.

Tom is survived by his wife and two sons, Gregory B. Tom of San Antonio and Steven L. Tom of Cornstock, Texas. He has five grandchildren, Cathy Tom White of Beeville, Christopher John, Cynthia, Joanna and Jeff Tom all of Dripping Springs, Texas. He also has a great-grandson, Dustin Ryan White of Beeville. Tom also is survived by two sisters, Mary Pendly of Barksdale and Stella Burkholder of Camp Wood, Texas. He also has one brother, William Edward Tom of Leakey and several nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Buster Pendley, Bo White, Jimmy Tom, David Carter, John Mark Carter, Chris Tom, Mike Chamberlin and Meryl Kenneth Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Hanneman, Eddie Tom, Al Garrett, Mike Hughes, Lent Wells, LJ Dean, Milburn Colwell, Charlie Bierschwale, Earl Howell and Ira Smith.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Methodist Church or the
American Heart Association.

Kerrville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
