Death came for Sister Barnes on Wednesday, December 2, 1972 at 2:00P.M. at Jefferson Davis Hospital. Death took her from her aching frame. She was born in Lincoln County, Mississippi to Mr. William and Ora Carter McDuffie on May 21, 1886. She was converted at an early age and joined Mercy Seat AME Church under the leadership of the Reverend ??,

She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Luther Gibbs in 1910 and to this union eight children were born. Sister Barnes moved to Natchez in 1926 and continued to go back to the Mercy Seat AME Church near Brookhaven, Mississippi and later years she joined the Sunflower Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Herny Russell, wher she remained a faithful mother until her death. No task was never to hard for Sis. Barnes.

Martha McDuffie Gibbs married Melford Barnes on June 6,1946 in Natchez, Adams County, MS. and he precdeded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing, six children. Three sons, Otha, Arthur and Jerry Gibbs of New Orleans, LA. Three daughters; Mrs. Marie Crawford of New Orlenas, LA, Mrs. Christine Young of Los Angles, CA, and Mrs Mattie Bonnes of New York; Brothers J.P. McDuffie of Brookhaven and Homer McDuffie of Marion, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grand children, and a host of neices, nephews, counsins and friends.
