I have a Western Union telegram sent on 3 Mar 1937 to Robert L. Burress (Cora Alice Holmes) from Cora's sister Dora Jane Givens (Herschel Givens) "Father very serious in hospital stroke not expected to live wire answer by westernunion=" H E Givens.
When the telegram was sent in 1937 flood had started receeding and rains had started again and river was up. Minnie Lynch rode last ferry crossing to get Cora Burress, ferry could not dock. Bob Burress and son Leo bodily threw her across the space to the ferry. Minnie & ferry boat worker grabed her as she went over. Cora didn't return home until in April, water was still up and no ferry's were moving. This was the Columbus Belmont Ferry in Ky. near Clinton.
Grandfather died in a hospital in St. Louis, MO. They were taking him into the hospital and 2 men walking by, he gave them the Odd Fellow distress Help sign, they held his hands going into the hospital. The hospital wanted them to go but granddad raised a big fuss. There was a menber of the Odd Fellows with him constantly until he died. They took over the funeral, I guess $ and all. He had a service from the Lodge. They had asked him how he knew the sign when they went to him outside and he told them that he was one of them and he was afraid and wanted a Lodge brother with him. I thought it was neat that he was so lucky they were walking by at the time. One chance in a million this would happen. This story was from Emanda Lee Harold, daughter of Cora Alice.
Services 18 March 1937 8pm at Baumen Brothers Funeral Home in Overland, MO. Burial Fri. 2 pm at Oak Forest Cemetary near Bland, MO.
