Margarette Ward Lee was the daughter of William Charles Lee, Sr (1754-1835) and Abigail Drusilla Staples (1764-1852)of Buckingham Co, VA.

On 2 Jul 1827, she married William Simpson Patton. He was the only son of Alexander Patton and Sarah Simpson. They had at least 11 children from this union.

Her oldest son, Alexander Lee Patton joined the Confederacy in 1862. He fought under the notorious John Hunt Morgan and was captured at Buffington Island on July 19, 1863. He spent the next 18 months as a Prisoner of War, in Rock Island Arsenal, IL. This broke Margarette's heart, and she died before his release in Jan 1865.
