Pfeifer was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Hays, Kan., to Michael and Apalonia Dome Pfeifer. He completed his high school education in Beeler, Kan., and recently celebrated his 73rd high school reunion. He was able to complete one year of college and one year of business school in spite of the hard times in the 1930s.
On July 20, 1937, he married Bertha Leiker. They moved to Wichita, Kan., where he worked for Meadowgold. They moved to Sitka, Kan., and started a farming partnership with his father and two brothers. In 1945 they purchased land in Cheyenne Wells and lived there for the remainder of their lives.
Pfeifer retired at age 58 and enjoyed playing golf, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed visiting with friends at the coffee shop and watching soap operas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha, in 1992; his parents; his brothers and sisters. Pfeifer is survived by five children, 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral mass was held Aug. 30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cheyenne Wells with Fr. Khanh as celebrant. An evening vigil was held Aug. 29. Burkial was at the Fairview Cemetery in Cheyenne Wells. Brown Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
