Samuel Dunham was born in Southington, CT, the youngest son of Chauncey and Sylvia Langdon Dunham.
He attended Yale graduating in 1860 and after Yale attended Union Theological Seminary.
He served several New England Congregational Churches until 1873, when he was called to serve the West Church in Binghamton, NY, which was a newly founded church.
Later he served as pastor of teh first Presbyterian Church but was recalled to the Pulpit of West Church where he served until 1909. At that time he retired but continued to serve as pastor emeritus.

Samuel and Sarah Clark were married October 6, 1863 in Southington, CT and were the parents of four children all of them dying at a young age.

On his 101st birthday , Feb 8, 1936 Yale honored him as the "Oldest" surviving graduate of Yale.

He also served as a permanent clerk of the Presbytery of Binghamton of which he was secretary for many years.
He was author of "Retrospect of a Happy Ministry" in which he described his work in various pastorates.
Samuel's father lived to be 95 and his mother died at the age of 105.

After the death of his wife Sarah he married second around 1903 to Robertha MacCleod.
