Thomas Louis was a retired grocery clerk at the time of his death. His father Thomas H. Mayne died in the Hurricane of 1875, on 16 September. He was one of two lighthouse keepers at the East Shoal Lighthouse. Thomas H. along with Edward Flick Jr. stood their post at the lighthouse and died there when it was swept out to sea.
