He studied law with Samuel Cleavenger after graduation from Waynesburg College. He was a prominent attorney in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pa., serving as District attorney and serving in the Senate. He married Mary Ann Russell on June 26, 1856 and they had 10 children: Thomas b. 1857; John (a doctor) b. 1859; Lyde b. 1861; James J. b. 1863; Alexander, b. 1865, Elizabeth b. 1868, Andrew Armstrong b. 1872, William b. 1874, Leah b. ? and a tenth child who died in infancy. His parents were John James Purman II and Barbara Burns Purman.
