Pat was known as Jody until he went into service in World War II. He served in the US Army in the Ninth Infantry Division in the European Theatre. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for service in the Battle of the Bulge.
A professor emeritus of education at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, he taught in the education department since 1954. While at St. Peter's, he chaired the education department from 1958 through 1987 and founded the department graduate program. He also founded the college reading center, where he served as director from 1954 through 1985. He also taught at St. Peter's Prep, Jersey City, from 1947 through 1958.
Dr. Caulfield received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Peter's College, where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He earned All-American status for baseball and was elected to the College Sports Hall of Fame. He was drafted as a first baseman by the Cleveland Indians. Dr. Caulfield received a master's degree and a doctorate in educational administration, both from Fordham University, Bronx.

Pat was the author of the book shown here, RECOLLECTIONS OF AN AMERICAN BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLEMAN, written from his memories and notes of the events while he was in the Army during the Battle of the Bulge in winter of 1944-1945. It was written for his children and grandchildren as indicated by the sub-title A BEDTIME STORY FOR MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. The book was finished and published by his family after his death in 2002.
