Maria Lind was born in Aalborg, Aalborg, Denmark. Marie was the first in her family to immigrate from Denmark to America. She and her best friend Pauline Poulsen traveled together at the age of 15. They traveled on the steamship Manhattan arriving in New York July 6, 1867. They traveled by train to North Platte, Nebraska. The trip to Salt Lake City was with the Leonard G. Rice wagon train. The trip was 54 days of walking with the wagon train. Maria married James Fall Freestone as his second wife in polygamy.
