Newman Funeral Services Held At Local Chapel

Last rites for Mrs. John Newman, 73, beloved local matron, were held at three o'clock Friday afternoon from the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home. Officiating was the Rev. Vernon May, pastor of Tylertown Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. C. E. Sanders, county association Baptist Missionary.
Interment was made in Columbia Cemetery under direction of Colonial Funeral Home.
Pallbearers, all neighbors of the deceased, were J. H. Bourne, J. S. Riley, Alton Tolar, Ed Brumfield, Vernon Broom, Bob Morris, Guile Rogers, Allen Dobson, and Wayne Pierce.
Mrs. Newman succumbed at 12:50 p. m. Thursday, February 27, at the Marion County General Hospital after a brief illness.
She had resided in Columbia for the past thirteen years and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Eaton, at 435 Lafayette Street. Prior to coming to Columbia she had been a resident of Foxworth during her adult life.
Mrs. Newman was born Lillie C. Beard, the daughter of the late A. A. and Myra Smith Beard on March 8, 1884, in Holly Springs Community in this county.
Mrs. Newman, with her husband, resided in their home on Lafayette for three years prior to Mr. Newman's death in 1947, at which time Mrs. Newman took up residence with her daughter.
Early in life she had united with the Holly Springs Baptist Church and upon coming to Columbia had united with the First Baptist Church. There she was an active member of the WMU being a member of the Polly Love Circle and of the TEL Sunday School Class a the time of her death. She was faithful in her attendance in her church life and set a Christian example for those about here.
Mrs. Newman had endeared herself to a host of friends and was noted for her bright outlook on life and good humor. It was said of her that she enjoyed life as she encountered each day, doing for others what she could.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eaton of this city and Mrs. Clifton Hinson of Tylertown; two sons, Ralph Newman of Galveston, Texas and Robert Newman of Meridian; two sisters, Mrs. George Green of Columbia and Mrs. Frank Green of Tampa, Fla.; five brothers, Berk Beard of Foxworth, Charlie Beard of Laurel, Jack Beard of Hattiesburg, Willie Beard of New Orleans, and Walter Beard of Vidor, Texas; and three grandsons.
