Obituary 3 May 1945 -- Following an illness, John William Davis, 83, died at his home in Chesterfield at 7 p.m. Thursday. A son of Benjamin (there is evidence that Benjamin died 3 years before the birth of John ?) and Elizabeth Morgan Davis, he was born April 17, 1862 in Jamestown, Tenn. He is survived by five daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs. Floeale Naville, Alton; Mrs. May Hampton, Mrs. Bessie Rhodes, Mrs. Esther Ambrose, Mrs. Margaret Gibson, Carlinville; W. E. Davis of Edwardsville and Harry E. Davis of Chesterfield. Also surviving are 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Abbie Johnson of Everett, Kansas. Rev. Herman C. Rhodes officiating. Interment was in Emerick cemetery, formerly the Meece cemetery.
