US Politician. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he served as a Member of the North Carolina State Legislature in 1786, Territorial Court Judge in Indiana in 1814, and a Member of the Indiana State House of Representatives from 1816 to 1817. Lindley who was a Quaker, also founded the city of Terre Haute, Indiana.Jonathan Lindley and his wife Deborah were among the first settlers on Orange County, IN. They came with a small group or Quakers to distance themselves from the slavery which existed in Orange County, NC. They cleared and settled this area.
