He enlisted in Capt. Hugh Stephenson's Rifle Company in 1775. This was one of the two Virginia Rifle Companies established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, as part of the creation of the Continental Army. Capt. Stephenson's Company and Capt. Daniel Morgan's company then made the famous "Beeline" race to Cambridge, Massachusetts. James Kerney is reported to have re-enlisted in one of the Virginia Rifle Companies raised in Berkeley County in 1776, and he was described as "a brave soldier."
