Gayle was born at Emanuel Hospital and lived with his wife, Agnes, in Portland until he passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones. Gayle attended Kennedy Elementary School and Jefferson High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 104th Infantry Timberwolf Division from 1944 to 1945. During his years in the Army, he received several honorary medals and citations. Gayle marrie Agnes Edwards June 28, 1944, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He retired from Sears in 1986 after 35 years of service. His hobbies included archeology, Indian lore, military history, and Japanese gardening. Gayle and Agnes' only son, Dennis Driscoll preceded him in death in 1984. Gayle is survived by his wife of 66 years, six nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and -nephews; 15 great-great nices and nephews; and two great-great nices. A military service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, in Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Hospice.
