Maj. Carney was born in Dayton, O., son of the late Albert Clayton and Etta Belle Swain Carney. He served in World War I from July 1918, to Jan., 1919, when he entered the Army Reserve. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Sanitary Medical Corps Reserve in 1926.
Maj. Carney returned to active duty in July, 1942, with the rank of captain in the Sanitary Medical corps. He retired Sept. 30, this year, for physical disability with the rank of major.
In civilian life, Maj. Carney was a teacher at Middletown township high school, professor of biology at Bethany college, Bethany, W. Va., head of the science department at Hamilton, O., high school, and principal of Miamisburg, O., high school.
At the time of his return to active duty, he was head of the science department of Hackensack high school. He held degrees from Miami university, Oxford, Ohio; Bethany college, and Rutgers and New York universities.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Alice B. Carney.
The funeral was held Monday night at the Adams memorial home, with Rev. Charles Johnson, rector of All Saints Episcopal church, Navesink, officiating. Burial Tuesday morning was in All Saints cemetery.
