Auto dealership owner Harold Kaufman dies
Harold S. Kaufman, an automobile dealership owner and 34-year Tucson resident, died Tuesday from cancer. He was 70.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Evergreen Cemetery Mortuary & Memorial Park, 3015 N. Oracle Road.

Kaufman was a partner in Williams Auto Sales when he moved to Tucson in 1960 for his son's health, said his wife, Pearline Kaufman.

Nine years later, he became co-owner of Jimmy GMC truck and motor home dealership. He stayed there until 1987 when he and his partner, Harold Laz, sold it to Cadillac dealer Don Mackey.

In the early 80s, Kaufman turned his business into a discount truck shop with a "no-frills, no-pitch plan" that included non-negotiable sticker prices. He said in a Nov. 27, 1983 article that the policy boosted sales and made his customers feel more comfortable without sales hassles.

Kaufman and Laz also were partners in First Charter Leasing of Tucson, which had $12 million worth of leases and 12 employees in 1985, according to an article in October of that year.

Kaufman and his wife invested in the Geronimo Hotel and Lodge, a University of Arizona-area complex.

Mrs. Kaufman described her husband as an outgoing, likable person who loved people. He also was charitable.

"All he had to do was be asked and he would give," she said.

Besides his wife, Kaufman is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Kneeman of Tucson; two sons, Barry Kaufman of Milford, Conn. and Neil Kaufman of San Marcos, Texas; and two grandsons.

The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1636 N. Swan Road.
